Hedi Slimane, head designer at Saint Laurent has left the brand after four years at the helm. He altered quite a few things in his short time there, such as removing the " Yves " from the Saint Laurent, changing the look of the all the stores worldwide, (and the showrooms, the space, the salespeople), working mostly from his HQ in L.A. not in Paris, and generally, making the image much, much younger. Not such a bad thing as sales went up significantly and altogether the whole look of Saint Laurent was copied everywhere, which is a form of appreciation.
But there is new blood in town, in the form of Anthony Vaccarello, the Belgian/ Italian that has been designing the Versus by Versace line. Donatella has good eye for up-and-coming talent, she mentored J.W. Anderson as well as Christopher Kane, now fully fledged designers in their own right. You probably have never heard of Vaccarello but have seen his clothes on celebrities.
So I suppose we can expect an ultra-sexy approach, just like Yves was in his day, one of the most ground breaking designers of his time!
Two classic images, Le Smoking, photographed by Helmut Newton and La Saharienne, on Veruschka.
I hope that this game of musical chairs stops for a while, it would be nice to see a designer maturing a brand in his own time rather than suddenly overhauling it, the archives and the image, to leave just a couple of years later, and to have the next one repeat it all over again.
